CANTON — The smiling image of a Canton toddler who received a successful liver transplant at 6 weeks old is being featured this month on a digital billboard in New York City’s Times Square as part of an organ donor campaign.

Posters depicting Matilda M. Smith, the 3-year-old daughter of Tyler J. and Kelly E. Smith, Fairlane Drive, are also being displayed in subway trains and stations throughout the Big Apple.

“I believe what Matilda endured was for a greater purpose,” Mrs. Smith said. “Because her transplant was so successful, she’s the perfect platform to help and encourage other people.”

Flyers depicting Matilda and a 20-year-old woman who is waiting for a heart transplant will also be inserted in playbills at Broadway performances, she said.

Sharing Matilda’s story is part a promotional campaign called LongLive New York. The campaign is affiliated with LiveOnNY, a nonprofit, federally designated organization that procures organs, eyes and tissue for transplants. The group’s work also includes encouraging people to enroll in the New York State Donate Life Registry. Continue reading
