Second chance at life a saving grace

CHIEFTAIN PHOTO/ANTHONY A. MESTAS Rick and Dona Skaggs hold a photo of themelves with their son Jeremy at the Pueblo County commissioners' meeting Monday. Rick donated a kidney to Jeremy 14 yeas ago and the couple is helping raise awareness about National Donate Life Month in April.
They like to say they gave their son life twice.

It’s not unusual for Rick and Dona Skaggs to celebrate two birthdays a year for their grown son Jeremy.

“Feb. 27 and Jan. 27 of every year. We as parents were able to give the gift of life twice, once on the day he was born and second on the day he received his kidney,” Dona Skaggs said.

Jeremy Skaggs, 32, was diagnosed 14 years ago with end stage renal failure during a physical examination for football in his senior year at Pueblo County High School. Continue reading
