St. Luke's Ceremony Highlights Importance of Organ Donation

Gloria Mattakat's son suffered a tragic snowmobile accident twenty years ago, which left her stuck with an important decision.

"We knew that there was no hope for recovery due to his severe brain injury so our family discussed about Tom being an organ donor when they approached us about the subject," said Mattakat.

Luckily, the decision was already made by her son two weeks before his death. Tom's decision to be an organ donor gave eight people a second chance at life.

"We've never regretted this decision we all made together," she said.

Mattakat was one in a room full of people at St. Luke's whose lives have been changed by organ, tissue or eye donation.

"I'd sit at a computer screen and couldn't see anything. The staff would blow the screen up so that I could squint a little harder to see things. The good news is that I have been the recipient of three transplants," said John Scott, an eye transplant recipient. Continue reading
