St. Mary's holding organ donor drive


DECATUR -- Phillip Hoots has a passion for organ donation.

As the groundskeeper at HSHS St. Mary's Hospital, Hoots raised the Donate Life flag, which will fly all month at the hospital, including during an organ, tissue and bone marrow donor drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in the main lobby.

Two years ago, Hoots' now-3-year-old son, Crosby, had a rare liver disease called biliary atresia, in which an infants' bile ducts are narrow, blocked or absent.

"It was a dire situation," Hoots said. "If he didn't get a new liver, he was going to die."

Crosby was put on a donor list and at 14 months received a transplant. He decreased from eight different medicines immediately after the surgery to one now, and Hoots said his son is thriving.

"Since then, I just like to get the word of mouth out and let people know how important it is to donate organs," Hoots said. "It can save lives." Continue reading
