Tuscaloosa woman 'reunites' with son through donor recipient

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - A Tuscaloosa County woman felt and heard her son’s beating heart nine years after his death.

His heart, now beating inside of 59-year-old Curtis Apblanalp’s chest, was one of several organs that sustained other’s lives after his death.

“I can’t bring Craig back, but in organ donation, Craig still lives in Curtis. So, I still have Craig,” Diane Rutherford said Monday as Apblanalp of Westboro, Pennsylvania gave her nine roses to represent the nine years he has lived with her son’s donated heart.

Their reunion took place Sunday night after Apblanalp and his wife, Jean, traveled more than a thousand miles for a weeklong gathering that had been years in the making.

“Ah, it’s been so long. We finally meet,” Apblanalp said as he hugged Rutherford.
