Utah Colleges Must Ask About Organ Donation

LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) - Under a new law signed by Governor Gary Herbert Universities and Colleges in Utah will be required to ask students if they want to be an organ donor. This comes in response to the lower number of teens getting drivers licenses.

Normally people are asked at the DMV and it's put on a drivers license. Alex McDonald who is a spokesperson for intermountain donor services said that's why this is so important.

"That's where 99 percent of people say yes to organ donation," said McDonald. "So we had to try and find another way of reaching young adults to give them another way to say yes."

HB 93 requires that an institution send out an electronic notice at least twice a year asking students if they want to donate. It also gives links to organ donation websites with information about it. Continue reading
