A Flag for a Hero

PEORIA, Ill.  People walk, jog, and drive through the campus of OSF Saint Francis Medical Center every day. But have you ever noticed a flag pole that proudly stands on Glen Oak outside of the hospital entrance?

As WMBD found out, it holds a special meaning.

The flag has two words on it "donate life". A message so simple, but with a meaning behind it that is anything but. To the Pellino family, it's a reminder of their son, Cody, who passed away exactly one year ago. It was Mother's Day.

WMBD was invited to witness the powerful flag raising ceremony in his honor.

On a bright sunny day outside the hospital, a small group gathers.

"Today we're here to honor Cody." Gift of Hope Organ Donation Specialist, Ruth Keith, says.

"Cody would love it." Cody’s Mom, Kinda Pellino, says.

Cody, a 23 year old who hated getting his hair cut and refused to wear a winter coat, but was always there to help others. Continue reading
