ATV death spawns message of safety, life-saving organ donation

ANGIE, La. - "He would tell me all the time, 'Momma, I don't know why you worry. I'm a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. Let's have a good time. I just want to enjoy life. It is what it is,'" recalled Melissa Kennedy.

It's a tough memory of Andrew Kennedy that his mother is now left to cling to after the 22-year-old was killed when his ATV flipped and landed on him. Kennedy's girlfriend, on the vehicle with him during the accident, is still recovering in a hospital.

"You have got to be careful on an ATV," said Kennedy, "You think you can't be hurt, but you can. And it happens so fast."

The Washington Parish Sheriff's Office says the potential hazards of ATVs are one of their biggest frustrations. Deputies say it's illegal to drive ATVs on all roadways, through shoulders of state and parish highways are permitted in certain circumstances. And regardless of where they're operated, deputies say ATVs should always be traveling slowly. Continue reading
