HESPERIA — Wearing neon yellow T-shirts with “Made History” emblazoned on them, two High Desert community leaders help set a Guinness World Record.

Hesperia Mayor Pro Tem Paul Russ and Inland Empire Donate Life Ambassador Lena Russell, of Apple Valley, help set the record for the largest gathering of organ transplant recipients in one location during the 14th Annual Donate Life Run/Walk in Fullerton on April 30.
Some 12,000 participants enjoyed physical activity, food and fun during the event that helped raise funds and awareness of organ donation, according to Russ, who received a kidney from his late brother, Raymond, 29 years ago.

“It was a bit cold and rainy, but that didn’t stop us from setting that record and spreading the word of organ donation,” said Russ, 56, who is also a lymphoma cancer survivor. "I had a viral infection when I was a kid and it eventually destroyed both my kidneys, but after all these years I’m still ticking.”
Russ praised the “fantastic” and “never-ending” efforts of Russell, 69, who has worked “diligently” to share the message of organ donation throughout Southern California. Continue reading
