Organ donor's best friend takes recipient to prom

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Silver Spring teenager is gearing up for prom Friday night, after overcoming some major health challenges.

In an extraordinary twist of fate, Mariana McConnie will enjoy this teenage rite of passage 500 miles away, in Cincinnati.

Mariana McConnie has the dress and the enthusiasm. She’s a high school senior going to her first prom.

“I’ve looked forward to prom since I was a little girl watching those Disney movies,” said Mariana, an organ recipient. “You’d see all those girls going to prom looking like a princess. I thought, that’s going to be me one day, obviously.”

The 17-year-old was asked to prom by Collin Lysaght.

“I can’t wait,” said Collin, Mariana’s prom date. “I’m so excited.” Continue reading
