Special Report: How a single organ donor may save many lives

Approximately 18 to 20 Americans die every day waiting for an organ transplant, according to the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance.

In Central and South Texas alone, 4,164 people are in need of an organ transplant. One of those people is Alyssa Pena, 15, of Weslaco.

"I get plugged in every night," Alyssa explained while showing CBS 4 News the dialysis machine that sits in her bedroom. Alyssa suffers from a serious kidney disease. Doctors have diagnosed her with end-stage renal failure.

"I just want a kidney transplant already to just live a long life instead of living from a machine," Alyssa said. Continue reading
