The Voice Sounds Familiar: KFDI DJ shares life-changing story, hopes to save lives

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -- As he swishes papers in the studio and hits buttons on the switch board, JJ Hayes gets ready for his next moment on air.

“It’s sunny, 53 degrees going into 80,” he exclaims to listeners on KFDI.

The Morning Drive personality has been a fixture at the radio station since June 2014. However, radio wasn’t always a part of his life.

Born in England, JJ moved to the U.S. when he was seven years old. He grew up in York, Maine, and worked several different jobs after high school. He was a commercial fisherman, worked on a dairy farm, served as a prep cook at a restaurant and spent time on a landscaping crew.

He said he found his true calling by accident nearly 26 years ago. He called play-by-play for sports at his old high school. Friends encouraged him to look into a career on air, he said. He found work behind the microphone in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Virginia and, now, Kansas.

“We just love how friendly and welcoming and giving and generous the community is,” JJ said of his arrival in Wichita.

When he joined KFDI, JJ said he was initially assigned to work afternoons. Behind-the-scenes, there were changes at the station. He was assigned to work mornings. Continue reading
