The wife of the UK’s first HIV-infected kidney recipient has told how she will be “forever grateful” to the donor who gave him “a second start in life”.

We told yesterday how her husband had become the first person in the world outside South Africa to receive an HIV-infected kidney.

The man in his 40s had been warned by doctors his life was in danger after being diagnosed with end stage kidney failure - caused by his HIV status and high blood pressure.

Today, 12 months after the transplant operation, he is off dialysis completely for the first time in a decade - and his wife says he looks like he’s “knocked off 10 years”. Continue reading
