Fallen Columbus police officer’s family thanks community at the Transplant Games of America

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A Columbus police officer killed in the line of duty was honored at the Donate Life Transplant Games of America in Cleveland on Saturday night.

Columbus SWAT Officer Steve Smith died in April, and saved the lives of two people by donating his kidneys.

Thousands of families attended the Games' opening ceremonies to celebrate a second chance at life.

Officer Smith’s son, Jesse Smith, publicly spoke at the ceremony, thanking the Columbus community and the state of Ohio for the support its shown for his family.

Members of the Columbus SWAT team rappelled down from the ceiling inside the Public Auditorium in downtown Cleveland, to take the stage with Jesse -- the son of a local hero. Continue reading
