For four long years, Melissa Coleman lay tethered every night to what she called a 12-foot leash.
Night after night, the Philadelphia resident dreamed of being healthy and free, of stamping a passport to go to all the places she wished around the globe.
In the real world, various treatments for Coleman's kidney failure had been fruitless, and doctors resorted to 10 hours of dialysis per night. But as the treatments dragged on, she kept hoping.
Years later, on Wednesday to be precise, Coleman was among thousands of competitors wrapping up this year's Donate Life Transplant Games of America.
The biennial event, held this year in Cleveland, started Friday and ended Wednesday. It brings together living donors, their families and transplant recipients while testing the athletic prowess of recipients in track and field, basketball, volleyball, swimming and other events.
