BALTIMORE — Mike Fine liked to fashion himself as “the Cal Ripken Jr. of podiatry.” For years, Fine, named one of the top podiatrists by Washingtonian Magazine in 2012, came into his Arlington office every single day — regardless of whether he had a cold or a cough or wasn’t feeling well — to make sure he could attend to the nearly 40 patients he saw each day.
Ripken was Fine’s hero; the baseball Hall of Famer’s consecutive games played streak inspired his work ethic, his desire to be there for his patients day in, day out.
“The spirit that [Ripken] had, which was to show up and be there as a teammate, to show up every day to be ready to play, be at your best, I felt like I had to be there every day to do my best for each patient,” Fine said. “I wanted to make them comfortable and as pain free as possible.” Continue reading
