Florence youth competes at 2016 Transplant Games of America

FLORENCE, S.C. – Seven years ago, Michael Sprauve learned that one of his kidneys was failing and that he would need a kidney transplant to get anywhere close to his old self.

The doctor didn’t tell him that the following years would lead him across America, competing for his state and making a network of new friends through the Transplant Games of America.

Earlier this month, Michael traveled with his mother, Machell, to participate in the 2016 Transplant Games of America and came home with some hardware to show for it. He earned a gold medal in shot put, silver medal in discus and bronze medals in bowling and darts.

“I trained harder for the shot put and the discus than the others,” he said. “So I was happy.”

Michael previously competed in the 2014 games, winning five medals at that competition as well. Continue reading
