Homer Glen woman gives gift to dad: her left kidney

Chuck Cuttone has received his share of heartwarming gifts from his four daughters, but one from an adult child the day after Father's Day topped them all — a life-saving left kidney.

Cuttone's daughters all rallied around their dad to help once they learned he needed a transplant. Each was tested, was found to have compatible kidneys and would have donated one to their dad.

But Beth Kohlstedt, 40, his oldest, said she was the firstborn, so she should be the donor.

"There was no hesitation," said Kohlstedt, at Advocate Christ Medical Center, where the transplant was done.

But Kohlstedt, who lives near her parents in Homer Glen, said she and her sisters, Patty Gilman, 37, of Orland Park, and Jessica Shaw, 34, and Laura Cuttone, 30, both of Chicago, had to persuade their dad to accept the gift.

"He initially refused. … This was his worst nightmare, taking a kidney from an adult child," Kohlstedt said. Continue reading
