First Vanderbilt double transplant patient on the mend

People on organ transplant lists often wait months or years for a phone call telling them doctors have found a match. Some never receive that call.

For an East Tennessee man, the chances were even greater that he wouldn’t get the call because he needed two organs.

The Athens, TN, man was the first double transplant patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

There were a number of challenges at play for Rex Parton.

First, doctors had to try to get two organs from the same donors. Also complicating matters was the fact that Parton was in his 70s, older than most considered for a transplant. Continue reading
