Girl's death 'horrible tragedy' for organ donation group

The murder-suicide that left all five members of a Sinking Spring family dead Saturday was nightmarish, and even moreso because the youngest family member had beaten such long odds, according to the donor transplant service Gift of Life.

The bodies of Megan Short, 33; her husband, Mark Short, 40; and their children Liana, 8, Mark, 5, and Willow, 2, were found by borough and Spring Township police in the home in the first block of Winding Brook Drive, according to investigators with the Berks County district attorney's office.

All died of gunshots in what investigators said appears to have been a murder-suicide. The investigation continues.

Willow received a heart transplant just a week after she was born May 6, 2014.

While in the womb she was found to have a severe congenital heart defect, and a quick transplant was her only hope of survival. Continue reading
