Organ Donors, Recipients to be Screened for Zika


MCALLEN – Donors and recipients for an organ will now be screened for the Zika virus.

Jorge Garcia was on a waiting list for years for a kidney transplant. A condition called polycystic kidney disease changed the man’s life.

“I’ve had several calls, until it was the right call for me,” he said.

Garcia had to go to dialysis three days a week, four hours a day. But that is a thing of the past for him.

“The treatment itself takes a lot out of you, physically, on the body, it takes a lot,” he said.

When a donor dies, their organs are donated quickly. For example, a kidney moves from donor to recipient in 24 hours. Continue reading
