Organ recipient John Ross tips hat to dedicated doctors with Canadian Transplant Games participation

MARIE - John Ross's exercise regimen is impressive for any 62-year-old — impressive for many people, for that matter.

Thrice-weekly swims and two, 20-kilometre bike rides per week are just some of the physical activities in which the Sault Ste. Marie man regularly partakes.

Not bad for a fellow who, a few years back, underwent heart transplant surgery after being diagnosed, a number of years prior to that, with a serious ailment of that most vital organ.

"I'm still in recovery mode … But the more you do, the quicker you recover," Ross told the Sault Star this week, days before heading to Toronto to vie in the Canadian Transplant Games, where he joins more than 200 fellow transplant recipients from Canada, the U.S., Mexico, United Kingdom and Australia, at the eighth event, held every two years since 2000.

"I love the challenges and, given the fact two years ago I had to spend four-and-a-half months in the hospital, it's a good way to set a goal and try to improve my ability to function." Continue reading
