While working as a medical assistant, Amayrani Gómez, 22, started to feel weak and exhausted. Doctors told her she was suffering renal failure, and she has had to go for dialysis every day since then while waiting for a suitable kidney donor.
She’s not alone. Thousands of people are on waiting lists for transplants.
While 44 percent of those in need are Hispanic, cultural beliefs and misinformation keep many Hispanics from registering to be organ donors. Organs are not matched according to race or ethnicity, but those waiting for an organ transplant will have a better chance at a match if the donation pool is diverse, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
