Upper Burrell man receives liver donation from daughter


Kelsey McHenry followed in the footsteps of her father, Patrick McHenry, a former Valley High School teacher, assistant football coach and track coach.

She became a New Kensington-Arnold teacher and was an assistant coach there. She served as head coach for Springdale's track team; Dad was her assistant.

Then Kelsey followed in her father's tracks to the operating room, where she gave him the ultimate gift: 60 percent of her liver.

After the successful operation on Aug. 2 at the UPMC Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, she regaled her father and doctors with the jingle:

“She delivered a liver

Just a sliver

Because she is a giver.”

The McHenrys' transplant is among a growing number of living donor liver transplants. They offer a higher five-year survival rate, 78 percent, than liver transplants from the deceased, at 72 percent, according to the Starzl institute. Continue reading
