Yorkshire Launches Dedicated Organ Donation Day

YORKSHIRE TIMES

A Hero Day, Yorkshire's first dedicated awareness day for organ donation, will launch this month to raise awareness of the 700 people in Yorkshire and 96 people in Leeds currently on the transplant waiting list.

The Be A Hero organ donation campaign, launched by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) in July 2015, is asking individuals and businesses to pledge to support Be A Hero Day, taking place on Friday 9th September during national Organ Donation Week.

LTHT has also released organ donation figures in advance of Organ Donation Week showing that in 2015/16, 100 people in Yorkshire donated organs after their death. 300 patients received a lifesaving transplant thanks to the generosity of these 100 Yorkshire donors, some receiving multi-organ transplants. In Leeds alone, 29 remarkable individuals donated organs after their death, giving lifesaving transplants to 91 people.

Dr Simon Flood, one of the Clinical Leads for Organ Donation at LTHT, said;
"We're pleased to be putting organ donation firmly on the Yorkshire calendar. Be a Hero Day gives everyone in our region a day to celebrate the amazing gift of organ donation, make their own donation decision and talk about their wishes with loved ones." Continue reading
