Young Castro Valley organ recipient thriving

Not everyone gets a second chance at life, but it is a gift Isabel “Izzy” Martin received nearly a decade ago in the form of a new heart at just 10 weeks old.

“She’s just a joy to be around, so we’re fortunate that she has handled it so well, and we’re also very fortunate that there was a family who had the compassion — out of their tragedy — to think about organ donation and donate their child’s organs, allowing Izzy to receive a heart,” Isabel Martin’s father, Paul Martin, said in an interview.

“Her heart was someone else’s tragedy, so someone was very selfless to make that donation,” the Castro Valley resident said.

Isabel Martin, now a 10-year-old fifth-grader at Independent Elementary School, was one of four organ and tissue donation recipients honored at the Aug. 31 San Francisco Giants game against the Arizona Diamondbacks to commemorate Donate Life Day.

Also recognized at the home game at AT&T Park were Isabel Stenzel Byrnes, of Redwood City; Arthur Jovan “AJ” Reyes, of Daly City; and Ailee Binauhan, of Daly City. Continue reading
