Kidney transplant program now at Sacred Heart

Those suffering from kidney disease in Northwest Florida are no longer required to travel multiple hours for treatment, thanks to a landmark program now available at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Sacred Heart Health System officials announced Tuesday a new kidney transplant program located at the Payne Building on the hospital campus at 5149 N. Ninth Ave. The program is a collaboration with University of Florida Health. It is the only kidney transplant program in the region.

Susan Davis, president and CEO of Sacred Heart Health System, said Birmingham, Gainesville and New Orleans previously represented the closest treatment locations for Northwest Florida residents. The process, which in addition to the transplant also includes pre-surgery and follow-up care, mandated multiple treks throughout many months.Now patients can receive the specialized care with friends and family close by.
