Man saves best friend's life, literally!

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- What would you do for your best friend? Two men answered that question and the result is pretty incredible.

The pair now shares more than just a first name. News-Gazette reporter Tom Kacich donated his kidney to his long-time friend, Tom Costello.

The surgery went well. Wednesday night, the friends came together to celebrate their past and their future.

Once a year, Tom and Helene Kacich have a night out at the Half Century Club. The history buffs catch up with friends and talk about Champaign County history.

"Every year, there's a trivia contest about what's happening, so that's fun too."

This year came with a bonus. The couple received the Residents of Distinction award for their commitment to family and friends.

"We thank you for your many years of service to the community and beyond. And I can certainly vouch for the beyond."

He can vouch for it because he's been on the receiving end. Last month, Tom Kacich game Tom Costello his kidney when no one in Costello's family was a match. Continue reading
