Fallen Mesa County deputy's wife shares story

KUSA - The widow of a deputy who was killed in the line of duty in Mesa County is honoring his life by riding on the 14th annual Donor Life Rose Parade Float on January 2nd.

Mesa County Deputy Derek Geer was shot and killed by a teenager in February. His wife, Kate Geer, says he had always been an advocate and supporter of organ donations. She was not registered to donate until their wedding day. He talked her into it, according to Kate.

"I was a little uneasy about it at first being in my mid 20's and never having even thought about it really," Geer said.

Unfortunately, it's a common mindset, according to Andrea Smith with Donate Life.

"I do feel like there is some sort of fear and misconception around donation and everything related with end of life," Smith said. Continue reading
