Family of Local Organ Donor, Transplant Recipient Meet

A Folsom family got a special gift Tuesday, the opportunity to meet the woman whose life was saved by a kidney donated by their daughter after her death on what would have been her 30th birthday.

"We feel like we've fulfilled our daughter's wishes," said Ken West, Kaylee West's father.

In 2011, Kaylee West suffered a brain aneurysm in her sleep. But she left a gift for a woman she had never met, Jeanne Schreiber, one of her kidneys.

"I first heard about her Thanksgiving week," Schreiber told FOX40.

While Schreiber always wanted to know more about who donated the kidney, doctors and others in the medical field encouraged her not to look into it.

"All I knew about my transplant donor at the time almost 6 years ago, I thought he was a male, and I thought he died in a vehicular accident. That's all I knew," Schreiber said.

But a couple of weeks ago, Sierra Donor Services called Schreiber and the Wests to arrange a meeting with the hope sharing Kaylee's story will get others talking about organ donations. Continue reading
