Morganton resident set to donate kidney to man she read about online

Morganton resident Brooke Burke is giving dialysis patient Kyle Dwayne Haga the gift of life.

Haga, 58, lives in Marion, Virginia. He came down with idiopathic glomelular membranous nephritis in 2014, a condition which caused his immune system to attack his kidneys. The disease scarred his kidneys so badly they barely function anymore. He was put on a kidney transplant list. Doctors told him he might have to wait 5-6 years for a kidney to become available.

While Haga waited his turn, a coworker of his contacted a reporter at the local newspaper, who wrote a story about Haga’s need for a kidney and posted it online in August of this year, hoping by some miracle to bypass the list and inspire someone to donate. Haga was in luck.

Burke, 35, used to live in the same county in Virginia, but moved to Morganton just a few months ago. She kept up with the newspaper there on Facebook, saw the article and was immediately inspired. Continue reading
