A 10-year-old boy who travelled to England from Ireland in order to undergo a life-saving heart transplant has died while waiting for a suitable donor.

Tragic Gavin Coyne, 10, had a rare heart condition known as severe dilated cardiomyopathy with heart failure that meant he needed an urgent transplant.

The youngster had been in hospital since November and flew from his home in Donaghmede in North Dublin for treatment in England, because this was not available in Ireland.

But the schoolboy sadly died before a suitable organ could be found to save him. Continue reading
