Donors give life with organ transplants

April is National Donate Life Month. It's a time to focus on organ donation and to find out how organ transplants save lives.

One East Tennessee family has been touched by organ donation more than a dozen times.

A woman named Nellie Cole had a rare chronic kidney disease that she passed along to four of her five children.

Billy Jarvis is her grandson.

"It started off with my mom's older brother, then my mom and her twin sister, then her other brother. Then I was really the first of the next generation to have it. Then Mike and Travis, too," he explained.

Henry was the first one to get a new kidney in 1972. He had two transplants, brother Jerry had one, and the twin sisters, Brenda and Linda, had two each.

All together, the East Tennessee family members have received 13 kidneys. Some came from living donors and some came from deceased donors. Continue reading
