April is National Donate Life Month

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - April is National Donate Life month and Rapid City Regional Health is helping the cause to raise awareness of the importance being an organ, eye or tissue donor.

Not only is this campaign designed to encourage people to register as donors, but it also celebrates those who have saved lives through the gift of donation. Last year there were more than 33 thousand transplants that brought renewed life to people.

"An Organ donation is truly a gift of life that is giving people the opportunity for life itself or you can also donate tissue and eye,” said Emily Baertsch, a hospital coordinator at Regional Health. “Improved life experiences, you can give sight to people, you could help them out if someone has a bad joint, we see burn recipients with skin grafting and things like that."

Approximately 54% of the adult population in the United States is registered as organ, eye and tissue donor. To register as a donor visit RegisterMe.org. To learn more about organ, eye, tissue and living donations, visit DonateLife.net. Story source
