Doctors encourage Valley residents to register as organ donors

As part of National Donate Life Month, doctors in the Rio Grande Valley are urging people to register as organ donors.

Twenty two people die every day waiting for an organ transplant, according to donatelife.net.


"The doctor told my momma I had a little time to live but I had a donor family who gave me that gift so great,” said Shantel Garza, 12, a liver transplant recipient, singing about the life-saving organ donation.

It's a song 12-year-old Shantel Garza wrote in honor of the deceased person who donated a liver to her when she was just 10 months old.

"She was born with yellow jaundice at the beginning and then they found out that she had a chronic liver disease, which was called biliary atresia. So it led to a liver transplant. It was devastating just waiting and knowing that the waiting was getting long,” said her mother, 51-year-old Alicia Garza. Continue reading
