Double joy for Irish kidney transplant patient after wife becomes pregnant

The couple had been trying for years but were unsuccessful until after Richie's life-saving operation.

A kidney transplant didn’t just save Richie McCauley’s life, it also brought baby joy.

After years of trying for a child, his wife Fiona became pregnant after he had his life-saving operation.Richie, 33, became seriously ill shortly after the couple were married but now has just celebrated his “first year transplant anniversary” and it’s brought huge changes to his life.

“We’re 12 years together and we tried everything to have a baby, but it just wasn’t happening. I was obviously too sick for us to conceive,” he said.

“But that all changed once I got the new kidney last year and we’re delighted that we are now expecting a baby in the summer.”

Originally from Tallaght in Dublin, he now lives in Wexford and had to endure a two-hour round trip to University Hospital Waterford three times a week.
