The heart of Andrew Kelly is now beating in another young man's chest because Kelly's mother decided to give a teen a second chance at life.

Killian resident Dena Hust, mother of Andrew Kelly, and the family of Andrew Guillot, who received Kelly's heart, shared their story at a flag ceremony Wednesday that honored organ donors, their families and the staff of North Oaks Medical Center.

North Oaks and Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency hosted the annual ceremony in observance of National Donate Life Month.

Charles Henderson, recipient of an organ donation himself, sang "Amazing Grace" as people looked up at the "Donate Life" flag flapping on the pole outside the North Oaks Women's Pavilion. The Rev. Jeff Moore, who gave the benediction for the ceremony, is also an organ donation recipient.

Hust described her son as a good person deep down who may have not always made the right decisions but seemed destined to help somebody. He was only 25 when he died March 2, 2016, at North Oaks Hospital as the result of a tragic accident, she said. Continue reading
