‘He was able to save five lives’: Memorial Medical Center rededicates donor wall

Wendy Geibig had watched her son, Mathew Christie of Windber, fight for life for eight days following a serious traffic crash in January 2016.

It was two weeks after Mathew’s 24th birthday when Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s doctors told Geibig her son had died. They asked if she would consent to having Mathew’s organs donated to help others.

Even in her time of grief, Geibig said she did not hesitate.

“It was very easy to make that decision,” Geibig said following the annual rededication of Conemaugh’s Organ, Tissue and Eye Donor Recognition Wall.

She and her son had discussed the importance of organ donations on several occasions, Geibig said.

“Mathew was all for it,” she said. “He was able to save five lives, at least, through the gift of organ donation.”

As a donor hospital, Conemaugh plays an important role in the region’s organ transplant program, Colleen Sullivan of CORE said at Wednesday’s event. Continue reading
