Living proof: Man speaks up on importance of organ donation

LIMA — Passing Lima resident Gerry Marcus on the street, he has the appearance of an energetic 66 year old who doesn’t miss a beat.

Those unfamiliar with his journey have no idea the heart he was born with almost quit beating on him.

But thanks to a heart pump to keep him alive and then a donor’s heart, Marcus has a new heart and a second chance at life.

On Tuesday, Marcus visited the Eastgate license bureau with Lauren Stevens from Lifeline of Ohio to talk to people about signing up to be an organ donor.

April is National Donate Life Month when organizations that help find organs for people awaiting transplants tout the gift of life while encouraging people to sign up to be donors.

Lifeline of Ohio spokeswoman Jessica Peters said there are more than 118,000 people on the waiting list for an organ transplant.

“Every day, nationally, 22 men, women and children pass away due to the lack of an available organ,” she said. Continue reading
