CHARLOTTESVILLE,Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- April is Donate Life Month, and people are encouraged to donate blood or become organ donors. One local family has benefited from such donations.

At three months, Kyrie Hughes was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy.

"They had to place him on a ventilator, and when they went to do that they didn't have enough time to sedate Kyrie to where he wouldn't be able to feel the ventilator," said his mother, Montanna Hall. "He coded and went into cardiac arrest, which is what started the beginning to needing a heart transplant."

Hughes received a heart transplant and had six blood transfusions.

"We were blessed," exclaimed Hall. "You don't see a lot of patients get a heart that quick."

On Tuesday, Hall with her son in tow attended a blood drive at the University of Virginia Health System and thanked donors for donating to people like Hughes.

"You still were selfless and found it in your heart to save my child's life and so thank you so much and you will never understand how blessed we are for you," said Hall. Continue reading
