Locals honor organ donors at remembrance ceremony

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Central Nebraskans gathered Thursday at CHI Health St. Francis to honor the heroes that saved lives: organ donors.

A remembrance ceremony helped a double lung transplant recipient say "thanks" for that precious gift.

She and many others are beyond grateful for organ donors because if it wasn't for them many lives would not be saved.

According to a Nebraska organ donation specialist, 121,000 Americans are currently on a waiting list for a transplant. 500 are Nebraskans.

The need for donations is vital. That's why a donor recipient, family members of an organ donor and several medical field workers had an easy time expressing their gratitude on Thursday.

They sang worship songs, lit candles and had a moment of silence as part of the remembrance program.

One recipient said she couldn't pass on this event because it gives her a chance to show gratitude. Her life has forever been changed because of her donor. Continue reading
