Macon Co. organ transplant recipient shares story, inspires others to donate life

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Nationally, more than 116,000 people, and more than 3,000 people in Alabama alone, are waiting for a transplant. Their only hope for a healthy life is an organ donor. 

Hundreds gathered at East Alabama Medical Center to raise the Donate Life flag up and release balloons to celebrate Donate Life month.

"One person can save up to eight lives through organ donations and help countless others through tissue and cornea donation," said Lisa Harmon with EAMC.

A 25-year-old Macon County resident, Ashley Bunn, knows first hand the impact of organ donation.

"I have a second chance at life. I can do all the things I couldn't do before," said Ashley Bunn.

Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 6-months-old, in 2014 a double lung transplant became her only option for survival. Bunn and her family waited nearly 2 years before they got the call they were hoping for. Continue reading
