National Organ Donor Awareness Week kicks off in B.C.

National Organ Donor Awareness Week kicked off on Sunday. The annual campaign organized by B.C. Transplant aims to highlight the importance of transplants by sharing people’s stories.

Susan Harrison says she was diagnosed with a rare liver disease almost 16 years ago. Speaking on the Jill Bennett show, Harrison says that after waiting months for a donor, her condition worsened.

“I was preparing to say goodbye to my husband and our children when in a moment, everything changed for us.”

She says her donor gave her a second chance.

“People that donate their loved one’s organs, they’re not making the recipients lives better, they’re saving our lives. You don’t get on that transplant list unless you’re dying, it’s your only chance to live. I believe that organ donors and their families are the most unsung heroes.” Continue reading
