Organ donation programs get boost from Rochester River Run/Walk 5K

Hundreds of people spent the day outside to support organ donation on Sunday as part of the Rochester River Run/Walk 5K.

It was the 16th annual installment of the event, put on by Strong Memorial Hospital. All of the money raised as people hit the pavement goes to support patients in the organ donation program who may have problems with costs that aren't covered by insurance.

The event was also meant to draw attention to the importance of organ donation in general, as someone can be waiting for a kidney for five to six years.

"Here in New York State, we have quite a few people that are on the wait list compared to other parts of the country," says Mary Salter, a liver transplant social worker at URMC. Continue reading
