Richmond to honor local organ/tissue donation heroes tonight

In honor of National Donate Life Month (NDLM), local volunteers will be recognized at tonight’s Richmond City Council meeting for their contributions toward the life-saving mission of organ and tissue donation.

The proclamation ceremony will occur during the council meeting at City Hall, 440 Civic Center Plaza, which starts at 6 p.m.

The list of individuals being recognized includes Debra Harkness, a liver recipient who supports donation efforts in the faith community and local DMV field offices.

Also, Taiwan Walker received a life-saving altruistic kidney donation from his aunt DeWanda Joseph, both of whom are being honored tonight.

“With his new lease on life, Taiwan travels internationally and also supports local events and the DMV program,” according to Donor Network West. “He is very outspoken in his effort to reach more African Americans with the message about how hypertension can lead to end stage organ failure.” Continue reading
