UNM Hospital encouraging organ donation

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Hundreds of New Mexicans are on an organ transplant waiting list hoping for a second chance at life. University of New Mexico Hospital is hoping that more people sign up as donors during April, which is Donate Life month.

There are 460 people waiting for organs in New Mexico. UNM Hospital Organ Transplant Director Joanna Saczek said the program had a record year in 2016, saving 93 lives from 36 organ donors. But she added the need is still great.

"If you fill a large football stadium and every seat is filled and if all those people happen to be donors and donated, we'd be able to fulfill the organ donation needs in the U.S.," Saczek said. Continue reading
