Family of woman who donated all main organs stresses donor need

AXTELL, Neb. An Axtell family is bringing awareness to the need for organ and tissue donations.

Steve Nelson said the pain of losing his daughter, Sara, will never go away, but he'll continue to honor her memory with an annual fundraiser encouraging organ donations.

Nebraska Organ Recovery states nationwide, a new name is added to the transplant waiting list every 10 minutes.

"One of the fears that you have as a parent when you lose a child is probably true no matter what age it would be- but it's that people will forget them," Nelson said.

But Sara's memory lives on, with hundreds hitting the pavement in Axtell Sunday to celebrate her life-saving donations, including all of her main organs.

The "Live it then Give it" 5-k fundraiser was the eleventh year the Axtell community has shown support for the Nelson family while giving funds to "Donate Life." Continue reading
