Mother’s Day without Julia

When Melissa Lownsbery celebrates Mother’s Day with her twin daughters and her own mother this year, it will be the first without her oldest daughter, Julia Griffin.

Traumatic brain injuries sustained in a fall down her basement stairs ultimately ended the 15-year-old’s life last August and while the family will remember Julia Sunday, they’ll be sure to enjoy the day as well.

“Every holiday is hard without Julia because she loved her family,” Lownsbery said. “When we all get together we take time to share stories of Julia, laugh, cry, but we try to keep it moving because Julia would not want us to be sad.”

Her mother took time off work to help Lownsbery when Julia was born and the family is close; Lownsbery said she thinks losing Julia was like losing a child for her own mother as well. Continue reading
