Mural honors organ donors

RENO, Nev., (KOLO) A small crowd gathered to dedicate Reno's newest piece of public art today, a mural with a serious message.

The mural is tucked away in the courtyard of a small apartment building near the police station. A piece of art that recognizes life saving choices born out of tragedy.

Today's dedication marked a bittersweet moment for the woman who commissioned it.

Dori Barmettler lost her 15 year old daughter Makayla to a car accident two and a half years ago. In the worst moments a mother can face, she made the decision to donate her daughter's organs. In doing so, she saved seven other lives.

"It forever connected me and seven other families for life, forever," says Barmettler.. "I don't even know them and we're forever connected. This is a way just to remember her as a community hero. She and all the other donors on the wall here. They're all heroes." Continue reading
