'We're so grateful': Mother's Day meaningful for Calgary woman at daughter's hospital bedside

Lindsey Marofke knows what will be her greatest Mother’s Day gift symbolizes another mom’s anguish.

A week before Mother’s Day, her daughter Greta received a new liver in the hopes it’ll vanquish a rare form of cancer centred in that organ.

“She received a whole liver, so it’d be a child’s,” said Marofke, whose daughter previously had 70 per cent of her liver removed.

“As soon as I heard about the liver being available, I immediately started thinking ‘someone else has lost a baby,’ but we’re so grateful.”

Her daughter underwent the 10-1/2-hour procedure at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital because she was deemed ineligible for it in Alberta, probably due, said Marofke, to the return of her hepatoblastoma and the perceived narrow chance for success. Continue reading
